A CELEBRATIONARY RETROSPECTIVE OF A CELEBRATIONARY BERDEN FETE 2018!
A gloriously sunny and warm day, one of very many this year, helped our celebration of seventy consecutive fetes a real joy for our many fans and supporters. Seventy years is a fantastic achievement and our fete has been the main financial stay behind all of our village facilities for each and every one of those years. It has continually eased the running and maintenance of both our church and village hall and, in recent years, our children’s play facilities. It goes further than that: As the fete also shows community commitment it has helped us to obtain grant assistance from both national and local funding sources. So, in short, Berden would not be what it is today without our magnificent fete, and it is probably the best in the area by a long way.
Huge thanks to all, and there were a lot of you, who got involved in any way – baking, donating, assisting on stalls, selling grand draw tickets, moving equipment (from A to B to C and finally back to A), coming up with ideas and just plain being there! There were just so many jobs, both small and large, and all very, very worthwhile.
Elsewhere in this magazine, and on the website fete Facebook page, you will find a full breakdown of the figures, and a lot of work went in to that as well. Close to the bottom right hand corner you will see that we ended up with an income of £11442.08 which gives, less expenses, an event profit of £9759.44. Just over £2500 will be retained as working capital to cover all overheads and ease the cash flow for 2019 and the remainder will be divided, in varying amounts depending upon needs and circumstances, between the church fabric fund, the village hall and the children’s playground.
Our gratitude to all of you who helped to make life easier for us, your 2018 fete committee and sub committees, and easier than it appeared in early January and thanks also to Paul and Michelle for the use of their truly beautiful garden.

PS. And my own personal thanks to both the committee, the sub committees and Bronwen for making the job of fete chair a real privilege. JB.

Come and guess the name of our Berden Bear!
Berden Bear will be visiting Clavering Shop this weekend. If you would like to come and guess the name of the bear, for a chance to win him/her and a bottle of bubbles, come along during shop opening hours, otherwise our Berden Bear will be at the Fete on Sat 14th July!
Save the date!
With the glorious weather in full swing, there is just one thing to do…think to the summer! Do make sure you save the date for our 2018 Berden Fete, which marks our 70th anniversary! We look very forward to welcoming you from 2pm on Saturday 14th of July 2018.
BERDEN FETE – ANOTHER FANTASTIC YEAR
It might not have been a financial record breaker, thanks probably to the rather indifferent weather, but in terms of smiles and happy people it was certainly a winner! Counting is still proceeding but at this early stage we believe that, yet again, we have topped ten grand. Actual figures will be reported in the October magazine, and on the website.
And so far as the pleasure that our fete gives to others that is immeasurable: I even encountered one little chap who was utterly delighted at winning a tea towel on the News Tombola! He must be easy to please come Christmas.
Very many people said ‘thank you’ for organising their annual treat – but that gratitude is not for me alone. Those thanks should be going to all the over 130 stall holders and others who contributed, on the day, in so many ways to making Berden Fete 2017 another great event. And without the great group of people who formed the fete committee and headed the sub-committees it just wouldn’t have happened so my thanks go to Kae Hewitt, Catherine Felstead, John Riddell, Brian Sumner, John Walker, Steve Bates, Amanda Coomber, Rob Talks, Sue Griffiths, Chris Thickitt, Jayne Liddle, Deborah Patrick and, also, Bronwen who, in particular, contributed in so many ways.
Berden Fete people are all heroes whether you have been mentioned in name or not.
Thank you – John Burton
